As of February, new legislation was passed allowing you to unlock your phone for use without being locked to one carrier. With an unlocked phone you will have many new opportunies.

You will be able to use your iPhone in other countries with a SIM card from that country's carrier. You will be able to sell your phone for a higher price, as you can reach more customers instead of only customers looking to join the carrier you belong to. Maybe you just want to pay an early termination fee and get out of your contract ahead of time; you'll be able to use your phone once it is unlocked with another carrier.
